SMS Messages and Delivery Reports

How does SMS work with Our Service Providers?

As the Echo platform is neither a mobile network operator(MNO) nor a bulk-SMS provider, we work directly with service providers. Through our service provider's infrastructure, we can facilitate two-way communication using a variety of mobile channels (SMS, USSD, Interactive Voice Response)

To ensure SMS messages are sent out successfully to our service providers, the following statuses indicate the message is currently being process, has been sent out or failed to go out from our platform. These status are:
  1. Blocked - We have put sending this message out on hold as your account may have insufficient balance to send out the messages(for pre-paid accounts) or you may have hit your daily spending limits (for post paid accounts)
  2. Requested - We have made the initial request to the service provider asking them to send out your SMS message(s).
  3. Complete - The service provider received the initial request, validated it and have agreed to send the SMS message(s) out.
  4. Failed - The service provider received the initial request, but validation for the request failed and they are not going to send this SMS.
  • All messages sent out from the Echo Platform, a message can either be Complete or Failed.
  • Messages are sent out within seconds and there is a very small window before a message moves from Requested to Complete or Failed.
  • Only Complete messages are sent to the network.

Dependent on the country and it's respective mobile network operators(MNOs), not all mobile network operators(MNOs) provide information on the delivery of SMS messages. Therefore, at times, the above statuses are as much information as we can provide. How does SMS Delivery work with our Service Providers And Mobile Network Operator(MNO)?

After the service provider has received and sent the message to the mobile network operator(MNO), they will wait to be told if the message was at all delivered or not. Once they receive this confirmation, they, in turn, pass it to the Echo platform.
Delivery reports only work if the mobile network operator(MNO) has a delivery notification mechanism. Dependent on the Country, some mobile network operators (MNOs) who do not provided information on the delivery of SMS messages
The following are used to track the delivery status of an SMS.
  1. Failed Delivery status indicates that the message has been successfully sent out from the Echo platform but the Mobile network Operator( MNO) has confirmed that they could not deliver the message to the subscriber. This may be because of a network issue, the phone is off or the MNO has terminated the service of that phone number.
  2. Delivery Pending status means indicates that the message has been successfully sent out from the Echo platform but the Mobile network Operator(the MNO) has not given any confirmation whether they were able to deliver the message or not.
  3. Delivery Unknown status means that that the message has been successfully sent out from the Echo platform but the Mobile network Operator(the MNO) has  tried to reach the contact but the reason is not clear why the number is unreachable. The Mobile network Operator(the MNO) then proceeds to retry the message depending on their validity policy after which if they are still unable to reach the number they discard the message.
  4. A final status we have is Delivery Successful indicates that the message has been successfully sent out from the Echo platform and the Mobile Network Operator(the MNO) has given us confirmation that the message has been delivered to the subscriber/contact
Delivery of messages is one beyond the scope of the service we provide here at Echo Mobile since this is affected by a number of factors that are beyond our control, that is, quality of Service being provided by MNO in different areas and the contact's phone being powered.
